Love the story. I love art also but I am not rich. I have paintings and photos hung up and they mean something. Either a good friend needed help with money or my Native American prints. I've missed you lately, hope you are having a blast connecting with the past. 'Berta
Hello, Roberta! I'm not rich either, and I was even less rich then, so I always thought the Bishop a perfect match! 😂 I know it seems I haven't been around, but I have, honest, every Tuesday, although no bonus Sometime Saturday posts because there's not been time. Very nice to be missed, so thank you! 😀
Thanks, Joyce! Thinking of Hogarth a lot today, strangely! Always glad to remind everyone of him, and introduce him to new fans 😀 And just saw first part, and how lovely! 😍
I don't know... The fine Bishop looks rather like a very fancy-dressed pig... And what's with the raised left hand-? Hmmm. As for the other amusing painting - there's so much going on in this painting that I can imagine him chortyling, snorting, and giggling as he added just one more idea! ☺️ Hope you're having fun, whatever you're up to. Cheers.
That's a great question about the hand gesture, Celia, and I have no clue! Maybe I should pop round to see the Archbishop of Canterbury (less than a. mile from me) and see if he can throw light? 😀 Thanks so much for good wishes!
I just love to hear that I'm not alone when it comes to unsuccessful research trips. I've just....well, it was March....had one to Scotland. I thought I was prepared. I had visualised successful days in archives tracking down all my ancestors blessed with the same name, sorting them out, making it all clear. As it turned out most archives were shut on the days I could visit. I ended up spending an awful lot of time in graveyards instead. The scenery was fabulous. The weather was as you would expect.
Even the best-laid archival plans almost never meet expectations, Jane! At best, we go in unexpected but exciting new directions. At worst, we have a slightly guilty (shouldn't be though!) interesting time. I know historians who've had to deal with entire nations closing to them because of war, etc-- it happens! Glad you now know you're in good company 😂

Love the story. Jack did print making - not etching like Hogarth - but he
OOPS - admired the complexity of Hogarth's work. Thank you for helping me remember that.

Gotta love the screaming painting at the upper left. A disapproving relative, I assume?
Ooh, I bet you're right, Gregg! 😀
