"And then, in 1848, just after the US decisively beat Mexico in war, and officially claimed California, gold was found. And everything changed again."
Gold was discovered in late January, 1848. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed on Feb 5th, 1848. I've read some sources that indicate that the guys at Sutter's Mill tried to keep the discovery of gold a secret from Mexico.
Officially, yes. But as ever, hostilities ceased before the Treaty was signed, so maybe I jumped the gun? 😂. And the folks at Sutter's Mill wanted to keep the gold a secret from *everyone*. Sam Brannen riding through SF yelling "Gold!" and then publishing the news kind of let the cat out of the bag😂
While you are past Sacto and SF (and ME!) on the History Geek Roadtrip, Sam Brannan is a character in California History that's worth your time.
Another one is Joshua Norton, whose story could best be done justice by Rod Serling or Roald Dahl (Yes, I remember you telling me about Dahl, eons ago.)
Another interesting and creative. Makes me want to visit Monterey again soon.
Thanks, Joyce! And of course it has a pleasant coastline.
Enjoyed this, Annette. Also: what kind of pastries? 😂
Lol, Jolene! Tarte au Citron, Tarte aux fraises et framboises, eclairs, etc.😀
Had to ask 😂
Of course!
Hey Annette,
The sequence of this sentence is incorrect:
"And then, in 1848, just after the US decisively beat Mexico in war, and officially claimed California, gold was found. And everything changed again."
Gold was discovered in late January, 1848. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed on Feb 5th, 1848. I've read some sources that indicate that the guys at Sutter's Mill tried to keep the discovery of gold a secret from Mexico.
As always, I love reading your stories!
Be cool,

After the sad food at the opening I was like, I hope they found out about Parker-Lusseau 😍
I grew up around here and all of this was my youth field trip fodder. Thank you for the perspective!
Yay! Yes, excellent pastries (and the quiche looked great!) Hope your field trips were enjoyable-- I'm curious about that!
Loved this post! There are so many stories to tell about those early Brits who sailed the seas and landed up on a foreign shore.
Special shout-out to my UK readers, Roland! And a subject to which I'm partial, since I'm one of them, minus the sailing part. 😀
Thanks, Annette. I am looking forward to chatting to you soon.
