"And then, in 1848, just after the US decisively beat Mexico in war, and officially claimed California, gold was found. And everything changed again."
Gold was discovered in late January, 1848. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed on Feb 5th, 1848. I've read some sources that indicate that the guys at Sutter's Mill tried to keep the discovery of gold a secret from Mexico.
While you are past Sacto and SF (and ME!) on the History Geek Roadtrip, Sam Brannan is a character in California History that's worth your time.
Another one is Joshua Norton, whose story could best be done justice by Rod Serling or Roald Dahl (Yes, I remember you telling me about Dahl, eons ago.)
Another interesting and creative. Makes me want to visit Monterey again soon.
Enjoyed this, Annette. Also: what kind of pastries? 😂
Hey Annette,
The sequence of this sentence is incorrect:
"And then, in 1848, just after the US decisively beat Mexico in war, and officially claimed California, gold was found. And everything changed again."
Gold was discovered in late January, 1848. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed on Feb 5th, 1848. I've read some sources that indicate that the guys at Sutter's Mill tried to keep the discovery of gold a secret from Mexico.
As always, I love reading your stories!
Be cool,

After the sad food at the opening I was like, I hope they found out about Parker-Lusseau 😍
I grew up around here and all of this was my youth field trip fodder. Thank you for the perspective!
Loved this post! There are so many stories to tell about those early Brits who sailed the seas and landed up on a foreign shore.
