ANNETTE TELLS TALES A teen escapes a dismal life in the US South, and reinvents himself as a military hero in France. And that's not even close to the whole story
Another terrific look at American History’s overlooked worthies. Overlooked only because of the colour of their skin. The US still has a long way to go in living up to its constitution. Thanks for telling Bullard’s story. I’ve forwarded it to a good friend in Kentucky who may share it farther.
I have known about Bullard for a long time, but mainly as a pilot (go figure). Thanks for filling in my abbreviated knowledge of this remarkable man. There was a 2005 movie called Flyboys about the Lafayette Escadrille. They had, more or less, Bullard in the movie. The character was named Eugene Skinner and had Bullard’s life story as his back story. The Military Aviation Museum has a plane from that movie and it’s the only one that actually flew in the film. The rest of the planes were props and, at best, taxied around. All other flying was CGI. I use that plane, a Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter, to tell Bullard’s story. I always mention up front to make a point about racism that he went to France because he was treated as a man, not some lower life form. He was allowed to do whatever his talents led him to. I also disabuse guests of the idea presented in the movie that the Lafayette Escadrille had as a mascot a lion cub named Whisky. Puh-leez! The Lafayette Escadrille had TWO lion cubs, Whisky and Soda.

It's a wonderful story, isn't it! Happy to share my take on the book! Thanks, Chris.
